Disturbed released their second album, Believe on September 17, 2002 and it debuted at number one on the Billboard 200. It sold nearly 250,000 copies in the first week alone and became their first of many number one hit albums. Since its release, it has gone double platinum here in the US, and continues to be well loved, along with the rest of the band's discography.
A lot of the lyrical connect focuses on religion, and spirituality, and is thought to be a perfect example of Disturbed growing as a band. Given, they only had one album prior to this, so that's a bit of a high claim. The lead single, "Prayer", sets up the album very well, and definitely does stand out on its own. Its a cry for help, which is what most religious people would turn to prayer for, hence the name. "Living just isn't hard enough. Burn me alive, inside. Living my life's not hard enough. Take everything away." While David doesn't sound sarcastic at all, saying life isn't hard enough is rather sarcastic, especially when you're begging for it all to just go away. Unfortunately, we've all felt like we were at the end of our rope before, and just wanted it all to go away, so that does make this track stand out a lot. A personal favorite of ours though is not a single at all, but we really like how it sounds and the lyrical content to go with it. That track is "Awaken", which appears to be calling someone out. "Awaken you, with a little evil inside. Feed on your nothing, you'll never live up to me. I've stricken you, I don't want to live with the lie. Feed on your nothing, and you'll never live up to me." Whoever is trying to tear you down is already below you -and they're never going to get on your level if they keep trying to rear you down. This song backs that up very well, and they did it in a quite badass, slightly dark way that we just love. Another track we absolutely have to mention is "Darkness", which is one of the few ballads in Disturbed's entire discography. Its absolutely beautiful, both musically, and lyrically. Its coming from a very dark place, while trying to find your way to be okay again. Words can't really describe it, its just best if you listen to it for yourself. Its no surprise to hear that Disturbed's second album was a hit, because if you know Disturbed, you know they are all around a hit and have yet to make a bad album.
