We all know that music, lyrics especially are a very powerful thing. Especially rock music. I've been thinking about this a lot lately, and find it very shameful that not everyone in the world knows about this. How many people would feel enlightened, or see things a different way if they just heard someone say something they had never thought of before?
For example, if you go to a church and posted the lyric, "What if the Devil was a lie? What if God did not exist? So with all due respect, tell me what is death? If life is just a bitch?" Yes, you would cause quite a stir, because not only did you question the existence of God at a church, but you said the word bitch. We all know that many people in the religious community have a major hang up about cussing. You'd cause a stir, but at the same time, you may get people thinking. Or if you went to a school, hospital, rehab center, or even just the store, and posted lyrics like, "I can't live my life always backing down, I gotta do this right so they can't make a sound. 'Cause I'm not here for nothing, at least I can say I stand for something.", "They say you were created to do great things, but words only come to life when you believe. Stop blending in, start speaking out! Don't miss your opportunity.", or, "If the sky is the limit, then I'll build a bridge up to it. If I make it back, I'd still want more." Maybe people will stop and think, "Wow, I can do this." Whatever "this" may be. It could be getting out of their town, or reaching a goal. Or even just not listening to others! I feel like so many more lives could be touched if they read the lyrics, but didn't know who they were by. No person can deny the power behind those lyrics, or how great they are, but someone may refuse to listen to it if they listen to things like Justin Bieber and Katy Perry and are against piercings and tattoos. People may also write off the band or artist if they scream, because some people can't understand screaming and say its not music. That's a whole other argument to me, but I will say this: Its harder to scream than it is to sing, so I give people more credit if they can scream than I do if they can just sing. I've got an idea, and I'm not sure if anyone will join me on this, but someone might so I will still suggest this. Take a piece of paper, and grab some markers, or a Sharpie, and write your favorite song lyric on it. It must be meaningful, not just catchy. I don't care what it is, if its one I used above, or if its not even a rock band! If it has meaning to you, write it down, and then take it somewhere. Whether it is a store, your school, the mall -it doesn't matter! Stick it somewhere in public. You might just change a life by just spreading a lyric around. The songs I quoted were (in this order), "Sink Or Swim" by Falling In Reverse, "All Signs Point To Lauderdale" by A Day To Remember, "Legacy" by Memphis May Fire, and "I'm Here To Take The Sky" by Destroy Rebuild Until God Shows.
