Simple Plan released an EP on December 3, 2013 of seven songs that actually were among 64 other songs that were written for their last album, Get Your Heart On but were ruled out. This EP left some mixed feelings, however. Get Your Heart On- The Second Coming wasn’t quite as impressive as Get Your Heart On.
They kept the same sound, obviously, seeing as these tracks were originally written for that album, but a couple of the songs were reminiscent of every other pop punk song, with the occasional attention grabbing lyric. For example, the opening track, “Ordinary Life”, musically it reminded me of “You Suck At Love”, and lyrically for the most part, it just sounded like every other song about not wanting a “normal life.” However, I quite liked a line in this song, “Don't tell me that it's too late. Don't tell me that I can't ‘cause you never did.” People get told every day that they can’t do something just because someone else couldn’t do it. You never know what you can actually do until you try it for yourself, and I liked that it was pointed out in this song. Actual stand out tracks were, “The Rest Of Us”, “Lucky One”, and “In.” Those are songs that are going to bring people together and get people to truly stop and think. “In” was sort of reminiscent of “This Song Saved My Life”, as it had a lot of soul and meaning behind it. “The Rest Of Us” is an anthem for all of those people who don’t quite fit in. “We don’t need to apologize for anything. We are who we are.” It’s just a great song for all of those people who don’t fit into what society claims is “right.” As for, “Lucky One”, that’s a song that will empower people to have hope when it feels like all hope is lost. “Oh, maybe one day I’ll be back on my feet and all of this pain will be gone. And maybe it won’t be so hard to be me, and I’ll find out just where I belong. It feels like it’s taking forever but one day things can get better and maybe my time will come, and I’ll be the lucky one.” That’s a song that needs to be played on repeat until someone feels stronger, until they realize that there is always hope, they just have to grab it. Over all, this is a decent EP. Its fairly obvious why these tracks did not make the final cut of the original album, but they deserved to be released. This EP has received four stars, because its definitely worth listening to, and has some very touching songs on it. You can get this EP now through Simple Plan’s official webstore or iTunes now.
