For many months now, via Facebook, Shinedown has been taking fan suggestions for covers. Nobody quite knew the details on why, but finally that information has been revealed. After receiving roughly five thousand answers, and crashing their servers daily, they had their songs picked out. On January 28, 2014, Shinedown will be releasing an EP of six covers, all done in an acoustic manner. The first one they have released is, "London Calling" originally by The Clash. This acoustic EP, appropriately titled, "Acoustic Sessions", originally made news back in the fall of 2013 when Bon Jovi refused permission for Brent and Zack to release their version of "Wanted Dead or Alive." According to Brent, the issue was not only Bon Jovi, but also included Adele, Phil Collins and Pearl Jam, as they wished to cover their songs, "Someone Like You, "In The Air", and "Black." These artists did not wish to give permissions at first for Zack and Brent to do these covers. The six chosen songs were permitted and do have videos to go with them.
"Eventually we will release all 10 songs, which will be great," Brent Smith says. "It's not about money for us. We didn't write these songs. We did this for the audience and for the fans, and we know it's something they're gonna dig." The track listing for this EP is as follows:
Once again, this EP will be available for digital purchase (it is assumable that it will be on iTunes and Amazon.) on January 28. Meanwhile, the entire Shinedown band have been working hard on their fifth album. Each member has had "homework" of studying other bands fifth albums. "I think we really focused a lot on the last couple of records on a ton of production -- like a 31-piece orchestra or a 10-piece horn section or 40 guitars and 50 layers of vocals, 'cause we love doing that stuff," he says. "But this time I think we're going to look at specifically the idea of drums, bass and guitar and being very specific about the vocal performance and really kind of focus on the song and how we want the sound to evolve. Now, a year from now I may tell you that, 'Ah, we went in there and there everything at it but the kitchen sink,' but that's the beauty of music; there's no rules to it, and I think at the end of the day the only think we keep in mind is they have to be great songs." The band is also working on a film! The film is directed by Darren Doane, who helped with the footage for the acoustic sessions, as well as clips for, "Sound Of Madness", "Bully", "Unity" and I'll Follow You." Brent Smith explains this documentary, as "Not a 'rockumentary' in its usual sense." He goes on to say, "It's a little bit of a difficult thing to describe 'cause it's such a unique concept, the way we're shooting it and the way we're putting together the life of the band over the past 15 years. We're doing it in a very impactful way, especially with how we're going to edit it and how we're doing to release it." The band has a lot going on this year, and Brent says he does not see the band touring until May or April of 2015, due to all they have on their plates. You can also catch Shinedown on a brand new episode of "The Live Room" tonight at 9pm EST on Palladia. Check your listings.
